Micro world wonders

What the world would look like if your body shrunk like Alice? Have you ever thought about that?

If not, once you step into the world you would fall in love with it! A recent Miraikan visitor, Mr. Klaus Macknapp from Germany took me to the super fun micro world.

Klaus is a science communicator at Deutsches Museum, Germany. He knows everything about microscopes!

Soon after we greet each other, he had me look at something through a microscope.

Waterbear. It was crawling just like a bear. Luckily, we saw the very moment a waterbear changed its skin! But this is just the beginning of the story. Here starts Klaus Collection - micro world photo gallery!

First one. Guess what! Notice the 1mm scale at the bottom.

The head of a match. Can you see any animal on it? Look very carefully at the right half, a bit above the middle of the photo.

Let's get closer.

It's a waterbear. Nice job on presenting how small it is!

Next is another waterbear balancing on radiolaria (a part of marine plankton).

Isn't it interesting? It offers a contrast of a waterbear, a tiny multicellular organism, and radiolaria, a large single-cell organism. It's packed with Klaus' love and pride in the waterbear❤

Next is someone's close-up shot. I'm sure you've seen it in normal sized world.

It's an ant. The point is at the tongue. Let's get closer.

Stripes on the tongue! Let's go even closer.

Don't they look like corn on the cob? Klaus told that they were teeth lined up on the tongue!

The next is a mite. But it is a special mite. It is a working mite carrying a gearwheel.

It is constructing a mite factory. I can't find a good word to describe his sense of creation.

In the future, we might hire mite workers.

By the way, the rod in the front is a human hair. Can you see anything at the middle?

It's not damage, but letters! It is a collaboration of excimer laser and an electric microscope. This very precise cutting technology is applied to eye surgery.

After visiting the micro world I feel like the world got much, much bigger than before.

Special thanks to Klaus, who took me to such an exciting trip and kindly provided all the wonderful pictures here. Klaus--I really hope to work with you sometime again!

Take a close look! Radiolaria message from Klaus.
